Description: Our group meets monthly to discuss current vineyard pests and their management. The goal is to create a strong local network for communicating the best IPM strategies and for support with solving viticultural anomalies. This month, we welcome Dr. Mary Wildermuth to teach us about her work on a safe, novel method to prevent powdery mildew disease in grapevines. Mary’s team creates microscopic blocker codes – which only powdery mildew can read – that tell the DNA of powdery mildew not to produce essential proteins it needs for infection. These blocker codes are made of naturally occurring fungal material and they degrade in the environment, which makes them safer to use than some other materials.
