SAN FRANCISCO — California vineyards and wineries are encouraged to apply for the 2023 California Green Medal Sustainable Winegrowing Leadership Awards, with applications now being accepted at greenmedal.org.

Vineyards and wineries that participate in a sustainability program in California are eligible to apply in four award categories, recognizing outstanding achievement in sustainability:

    1.  Leader Award, given to the vineyard or winery that demonstrates success and innovation in all of the below three areas of sustainable winegrowing and inspires others.
    2.  Environment Award, given to the vineyard or winery that best demonstrates Environmental Stewardship  through maximized environmental benefits from implementing sustainable practices.
    3.  Community Award, given to the vineyard or winery that is aGood Neighbor and Employer  using the most innovative practices that enhance relations with employees, neighbors, and/or communities.
    4.  Business Award, given to the vineyard or winery that best demonstrates Smart Business through efficiencies, cost savings, and innovation from implementing sustainable practices.

“The California Green Medal awards provide an annual opportunity to showcase vintners and winegrape growers who are deeply committed to environmentally and socially responsible practices,” said Allison Jordan, Executive Director. “We are excited to review the 2023 entries, which always provide practical and innovative on-the-ground examples of the California wine community’s leadership in sustainable winegrowing.”

Winners will receive a California Green Medal and be recognized in widely distributed communications, as well as an awards recognition event after April 2023.

The ninth annual California Green Medal Sustainable Winegrowing Leadership Awards is being judged by a panel of wine and sustainability experts including Allison Jordan, California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance; Anna Brittain, Napa Green; Beth Vukmanic, Vineyard Team; Cyril Penn, Wine Business Monthly; Evan Goldstein, MS, President, Full Circle Wine Solutions and Master the World; Jennifer Richards, Sonoma County Winegrowers; Karen Block, PhD, UC Davis Viticulture and Enology; Natalie Wymer, Wine Institute; and Stephanie Bolton, PhD, Lodi Winegrape Commission.

The California Green Medal is presented by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA), California Association of Winegrape Growers, Wine Institute, Lodi Winegrape Commission, Napa Green, Napa Valley Vintners, Sonoma County Winegrowers and Vineyard Team.
