LWC Tailgate Talk: High Cordon Trellising Trial

Date: September 20th, 2016

Time: 8:30-10:30am

Cost: FREE

Venue: Kautz Farms. About 0.6 of a mile south of Armstrong Rd.; on Live Oak Rd, about 0.75 miles on right hand side across from Kautz Farms field offices with the palm tree bordered planting of Petit Verdot.

Speakers: Paul Verdegaal and Joe Valente

Description: With advances in mechanization and increased labor costs, more growers are exploring higher production and mechanized trellising systems. In 2011, a replicated trial was planted in a sandy loam Kautz Farm vineyard with Cabernet Sauvignon clone 337 on 039-16 rootstock to compare four trellis systems: 1. high cordon optimized for machine pruning, 2. horizontally divided canopy (quad cordon, spur pruned), 3. horizontally divided canopy (cane pruned), and 4. standard bilateral cordon (T-top trellis, spur pruned). At this meeting we will look at the vines, evaluate and taste the grapes, and get Brix, pH, and TA data from each system. Paul Verdegaal will lead a discussion of the pros and cons for each system, as evaluated over the past five years, with time for questions.
